Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education spotlights Scott Seaman’s contributions to legal scholarship and civic engagement.
The Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education featured Scott Seaman in its April 2014 Author Spotlight, acknowledging his contributions as an author and general editor of WRONGFUL-DEATH AND SURVIVAL ACTIONS IN ILLINOIS, which is now celebrating its 21st birthday and is in its 5th edition. IICLE also noted some of Scott’s other legal publications and credited him for being “a champion for people battling blood cancer.” https://www.iicle.com/articles/Article.aspx?ID=450
April 2014 Author Spotlight Scott Seaman
When Scott Seaman of Meckler Bulger Tilson Marick & Pearson LLP in Chicago noted more than 22 years ago the need for a comprehensive, authoritative book on the subject of Illinois wrongful-death and survival actions, he decided to approach IICLE®, which he describes as “the logical choice.” This month’s Spotlight Author expresses his thanks for the work of “several talented practitioner-authors and IICLE®’s professional staff” resulting in the handbook WRONGFUL-DEATH AND SURVIVAL ACTIONS IN ILLINOIS, which is now celebrating its 21st birthday and is in its 5th edition.
“I frequently referred to IICLE® handbooks and still do,” states Seaman, adding that “IICLE®’s commitment to providing a thorough recitation of the law as well as practical pointers and tools is what makes IICLE®’s library so strong.”
Seaman, who has served as General Editor of the handbook from its inception, explains that the authors who write for the project strive “to provide a resource packed with practice tips and forms ranging from sample pleadings and discovery requests, to deposition and trial preparation outlines, to pertinent statutes and court rules.”
He says his “rewarding” experience volunteering with IICLE® over the years inspired him to take on additional writing projects, including a national insurance law treatise entitled ALLOCATION OF LOSSES IN COMPLEX INSURANCE COVERAGE CLAIMS and a nonlegal book called BATTLING AND BEATING CANCER — THE CANCER SURVIVAL BOOK.
“IICLE®’s formula of providing reliable and useful resources — a combination of treatise and practice guide — remains a winning approach for the authors as well as the readers,” he says. “IICLE®’s approach of capturing the practitioner’s talents, affording authors the flexibility to give appropriate treatment to the subject, and providing them with support and resources makes writing a chapter or editing a publication quite manageable,” says Seaman.
Seaman concentrates his practice in complex commercial law and litigation, including insurance and reinsurance. Among his many awards and distinctions, he is a founding fellow of the American College of Coverage and Extracontractual Counsel and was honored as the Corporate INTL Magazine 2014 Insurance Attorney of the Year in Illinois. He earned his J.D. magna cum laude from Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
Seaman also is actively engaged in civic and service activities outside of the legal profession, and along with his wife Charlene, he is a champion for people battling blood cancer. Seaman cofounded the Chicago Blood Cancer Foundation, a nonprofit organization committed to curing lymphoma, leukemia, and myeloma. He previously had cofounded a Chicago chapter of a national blood cancer organization. Seaman also cohosts "Battling and Beating Cancer" on the Blog Talk Radio Network and a television show by the same title originating from the CAN TV studios in Chicago.
